Econocides Rise as Republicans Dicker for Power

Yesterday in Wilmington, California, a man and wife who both had lost their jobs at Kaiser Permanente enacted a suicide pact, first killing their five children, including two sets of twins. Meanwhile, in our nation’s capitol, Republicans dickered over provisions of President Obama’s economic stimulus proposal. Will their obstructionism raise the likelihood of more “econocides” in the future?

I’m not sure who coined the term “econocide,” which refers to a suicide that is the direct result of economic loss, but there is no doubt that this tragedy is on the rise. Unlike the crash of 1929, which caused some bankers to jump from their skyscraper windows, today’s economy is causing econocides among everyday, desperate citizens. This past fall, in Porter Ranch, California, a man who had lost his job, house and savings committed a similar family murder and suicide; and such tragedies have unfolded in other states as well. Even the fat cats are vulnerable… so far there have been five (that we know of) top financial executives who have committed econocide.

Job loss has always been a trigger for despair, especially among men who define themselves by their breadwinning ability. As far back as March, 2008, the Labor Department reported the jobless rate — also called the “not employed rate”— at 13.1 percent for men in the prime age group. Only once during a post-World War II recession did the rate ever get that high. It hit 13.3 percent in June 1982, the 12th month of the brutal 1981-82 recession. The jobless rate for January, 2009 is not yet available but it is sure to be higher, especially considering that, in December, 2008 alone, U.S. employers took 2,275 mass layoff actions, involving 226,117 workers.

If you count yourself among those who are annoyed by panhandlers on freeway off-ramps holding “Help Me, I’m Homeless” signs, you may wish to meditate when you drive… because homeless statistics also are skyrocketing. Accurate, current statistics are sandwiched within a proliferation of websites dedicated to helping the homeless survive… but there are tens of millions, including an unknown number of American children, whose only “home” is a cardboard box.

Clearly, now is not the time for Republicans to put Obama in his political place by fabricating mock arguments over the efficacy of his stimulus plan. Republicans raised no objections when Bush converted an economic surplus into the biggest deficit in American history by profligate spending on an ill-advised preemptive war. It didn’t bother them to pay government-contracted Blackwater operatives more per day than our soldiers earned in a month. So it shouldn’t offend them when indigent teenagers receive free condoms to help prevent disease and avoid unwanted pregnancies that they, and our welfare system, cannot afford.

Republicans were defeated in the recent election because they demonstrated an appalling lack of responsibility for the economic crisis their policies largely created. Now they are demonstrating an equally dim view of their own best interests. Instead of dickering to regain face and reassure themselves that they can strut if they feel like it (although in their passion to claim undeserved power even walking might be difficult for them), what they should do is reach across the aisle in a sincere, bi-partisan effort to resolve our economic crisis.

Or, maybe Republicans would rather coin a new term for political suicide… any suggestions?

This is tragic on so many levels but especially since there really are so many resources out there to help people through this sort of thing. Maybe I am more aware of them becuase I work in a credit union, but people need to get some perspective.

The morally and idealogically banckrupt Republicans really don't have a leg to stand on. I don't think people are listening this time around. Obstructionism isn't going to work against this President at this time under these conditions. People are clamoring for cooperation and the President made a brilliant move yesterday. The ball is in their court and they will swing and miss dramatically.

How about coward? Yes Republican's suck IMHO. But the husband and wife who killed their children are worse...OMG how could they? And who cares that strangers would have to take care of them (although I hear the man's mother survives; imagine how she feels today). I wonder, did he or his wife ask his babies if they'd like to die? If they'd like a bullet in the head? God damn it!! I am so angry at people who do this...the rich bastards on wall street or elsewhere who want to take their own lives so be it...even though they might leave grief stricken families, they have at least left them and not taken their lives. To kill anyone is abhorrent, but to kill your own children, well I'd rather sleep with Charlie Manson than do that and I'm as hetro as they get!

SDFG: A very passionate and moving comment. And regarding health care... I live for the day when we pass a healthcare bill that puts greedy insurance and pharmaceutical corporations out of business. To see how much our values have deteriorated, watch an old movie from the 40s, when "the little guy" was routinely portrayed as a hero and the virtues of honesty and integrity were extolled... then compare it with recent blockbuster films in which crooks are glamorized, as in "Smokin' Aces" to name one of the countless examples. (Smokin' is fun to watch but doesn't engage us on the level of our humanity... just gives us an outlet for our rage and frustration.)

yP, I'm not sure I would wanna hire someone if I knew his/her main solution for dealing with a serious problem would be to either murder their loved ones, or their employer & fellow employees, or a random stranger in the street such as your child or parent.

I would want these people, if I could even know them beforehand, to first seek the social resources available that would show them options when troubles arise.

People need a larger perspective in their lives beyond the material so when troubles arise they can be one of the survivors.

Cafe Pasadena: I think the unanswered question is... was this family unstable from the get-go? Or did their economic catastrophe induce a psychotic reaction?

Neighbors say they were open and engaging, and we know they were active at PTA meetings in their children's school.

Did these parents feel so disoriented over the loss of their jobs and impending loss of their homes and everything they held as "normal" that they lost perspective and decided to take a family trip to heaven, where there are jobs for everyone?

We will never know... but if the restoration of our economy helps prevent future such tragedies, it can't come a moment too soon.

Something has to be done...needs to be done...I have to be with yak on this one...why bicker and fight over a few drips of power. Obama is showing he is TRYING with all his might to show bi-partisanship...I just don't understand what the HELL they want!!??!!
If I were Obama and the Dems I would just do what they think is right and then the Repubs. can blame us later if abortions go on the rise and the poor wealthy people go bankrupt because they dont get one more tax break...boo hoo :(
IT has been shown over the last eight years that giving the extreme wealthy every tax cut in the world does NOT...I repeat to any Republicans listening...DOES NOT trickle down or help the economy...it puts MILLIONS more in the poor house. George gave all the breaks to the rich under this guise and threw a couple hundred bucks to people with children just to shut us up....and it DID NOT WORK...so I say let the Democrats try their way for awhile, see what happens...they can bitch and complain and whine and instill fear in us in four years...for now Just SHUT THE F*** UP and get out of our way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Republicans are still in a state of denial... they can't wrap their minds around the fact that the reins of power no longer are in their grip.

And they also fail to appreciate the significance of Obama's win... a majority of Americans have evolved beyond the reach of Republican lies and tricks. Now that we have a champion in the White House, we are in a cooperative spirit, and GOP smear tactics only turn us off.

Cafe Pasadena: How did you respond when our previous administration gave us Abu Ghraib?

Does it make you howl with delight to learn that everyday American citizens... NOT those with "ties to terrorist groups"... were routinely and illegally wiretapped by a President who lied about the activity?

Go ahead, laugh... I'll take my champion.

We humans, on the other hand, need our champions... and the economic stimulus package will be nice too, since we all have cats and dogs to feed!

And, believe me it will be another huge bill these pols will be sticking us with.
God forbid it the foreigners decided no longer to lend the pols the money to pay for it.

It seems one of the positive contributions of Obama's plan is the element of HOPE.
The lack of hope is a significant factor in econocide, don't you think? The loss of a job, the inability to see a future that allows you to provide for yourself or your family, the shame rightly or wrongly felt at having one's significant sense of self-identity/self-worth being ripped away...there' no hope to be found.
Obama is doing something. Spending money on job programs is not pork spending to me. And even if the stimulus package falls short of reaching all its goals, it still says our government cares about the people and is trying to do something in this time of economic crisis.
To the Republicans - now's not the time for posturing. Help us. Join the president's effort to bring hope as well as economic prosperity back to working America.

Econocides. Econoridiculous that heretofore upstanding people could suddenly decide that because of lack of job and/or roof overhead that you not only can't face another day but take those precious days from your children. I don't get it. The children could have been taken to the firestation. The no longer breadwinner could then do his chickenself in. It takes guts to live sometimes and these Econocide gutless wonders leave me wondering.

Dixie Jane: see Roy's remarks (# 2 comment). Yes, suicide is a form of cowardice... although I do know that some people can be in such excruciating emotional pain that death seems better to them, much like some torture victims would rather die than endure more pain.

That said... to me, the very definition of evil is taking the life of an innocent child. There are some paradoxes I will NEVER be able to understand, and this is one of them. All I can do is feel enraged over it.

What that man did to his family just makes me sick. I can understand that certain circumstances can lead to deadly, unpredictable actions but this one really got to me and even though Obama is trying to turn the tide against this dire situation, I don't think he fully understands how bad things REALLY are. And one more thing: I found his recent interview with Steve Croft of "60 Minutes" really appalling. I mean, c'mon. Let me get this straight; he's the President of the good 'ol US of A doing in interview on live TV then all of a sudden his attitude shifts from firm to laid back and laughing, completely ignoring the fact that this country's in serious trouble no less the minute?!?!?!?! How can anyone NOT be appalled and disgusted?!?!?!

Something is wrong with this picture. VERY wrong.
