VP Will Have Lips Sewn Shut to Prevent Gaffes

Vice President Joe Biden, the White House announces, has agreed to consider an elective surgery that will silence his big, gaffe-mill mouth by sewing shut his lips.

House Democrats and Republicans, as well as a substantial Senate majority, agree that this is the best treatment option for Biden’s post-campaign tour-ette syndrome of kooky comments. “If Sarah Palin had made comparable remarks she would have been satirized on Saturday Night Alive, (sic)” Pat Buchannan is rumored to have said. SNL writers declined to confirm that tonight’s program will make hay from the VP’s fast-growing field of eyebrow-raisers, but neither did they deny it.

The gaffe which led to the unusual treatment option occurred when Biden, while swearing in a crowd of White House staffers, quipped that, "my memory is not as good as Justice Roberts" (who flubbed the words to the oath of office during Tuesday’s inauguration). That quip, and the evil-eye stare it elicited from President Obama, traveled at the speed of light to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where it was mercilessly rewound and repeated over canned laughter. The gaffe also made an appearance on YouTube, although there is no indication it will match the hits earned by the “Leave her alone” performance of Brittany Spears’ crybaby fan last year.

White House insiders claim that little Sasha is purported to have asked, “Daddy, why does that guy with the big white teeth keep saying all those silly things?” She added that, “everybody in third grade says he’s trivializing his position.”

The President, who has publicly stated that he seeks opinions from a variety of sources, was then drawn aside by First Lady Michelle, whose remarks on the subject were emphatic but not clearly heard. Apparently, the two then consulted with the President’s mother-in-law Marian Robinson, who, in light of the country’s economic woes, offered to perform the procedure using her own sewing kit. The President, however, seeking to avoid any appearance of impropriety, visited the AMA website to find an appropriate specialist, which he then text-messaged to Biden. At no time during this process did the President, or Sasha, or Michelle, or Marian or Malia have any contact whatsoever with disgraced Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevish, although the Governor has threatened to reveal details of the medical appointment at his next regularly scheduled press conference.

Members of the Press Corps did not ask Vice-President Biden to comment on the unusual procedure, but he offered that, “It seems like the right solution for now, although if I had known that Michelle would be such a poor sport about a few harmless remarks I wouldn’t have spent $20,000 on my veneers.”

SNL has already had a blast with Biden. I loved the sketch during the campaign where the actor portraying Biden said Biden's actual quote about how a massive international crisis would happen if Obama won -- and it was hilarious, but also a little scary because it wasn't even embellished at first. Darryl Hammond played Murtha in the same skit.

Nik- You're right, this post was rather mean-spirited... so much so that I removed it from my SFGate blog. (Visitors to this blog are all friends, and thus more forgiving of ill-considered words!)

I don't know why I ridiculed Biden so mercilessly, because I like him... but he HAS been acting like a goofball lately, at a time when the Prez needs everybody to be on board.

I guess the President won't send me a telegram offering me a high-paying job after this!

Wait, wait, wait... not post something becasue it's too hard on a politician? We are nothing if we are not even-handed in our satire as well as praise. You know how I feel about this. Biden totally deserves this -- he's a gaffe machine, and more so after his famous three-martini lunches. It's a phony double-standard of us to rip apart the Right and look the other way about our party's goofball behavior. I love that Daily SHow is showing that Obama's stance is so close to Bush -- right down to the same lines about keeping America safe. Satirists keep politicians honest. Don't make separate rules for each side, please!

Actually, as a Democrat I can have as one-sided as an opinion as I like (sorry L...Im just being stubborn like that these days:):):)!!!! I just thought the post was sort of mean...I think to try and make a joke and it come off not sounding funny is one thing...but NOT to be able to carry on a grammactically correct sentence in a conversation when you are the President of the U.S. is something totally different. One implies you aren't funny...and Im okay with my VP being that. The other implies you are not intelligent and I am NOT okay with that in a President or V.P.

And I still say, it's the artists and satirists and comediens and critics who do more to influence our pols than anyone else. Gore didn't realize he was perceived as a professorial, sleep-inducing drone until he was tipped off by his staff to watch Darryl Hammond's impersonation on SNL. (And, some pollsters say that Will Farrell's lovable goof version of W is part of what made Bush win.)

If enough people make cracks about Biden's gaffes, maybe he'll learn to make sure not to sound like such a nitwit. He's a really bright guy, but he needs to see that his rambling stuff makes him look bad. And even if he doesn't see it, it's just ripe for spoofing. The "gird your loins" line in the campaign was hilarious -- and actually a bit frightening...

Humor, in my opinion, is a great way to talk about issues. As long as it's not sexist -- like so much of the stuff about Palin and Hillary -- or ageist or racist, I say load it on. My fear has been that the comics are going to be too afraid to mock Obama for fear of upsetting people, and I think that will be a real shame. Obama already has a reputation for not having much of a sense of humor, and I think that's a misconception. At least, I hope it is!

You can't just always report just the good... isn't part of this blog satire? If you can rip the right a new a hole why not the left when it is deserved? Biden has been making stupid silly comments and deserves the whipping he got from you. And besides, that doesn't mean he still isn't light years better than Chaney.
