Plop a Beret on Its Head, and Presto... A Pedophile Becomes a Genius!

I don’t care, and I don’t think anyone else should, either, that Roman Polanski directed Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, The Pianist and other works of genius. He also drugged a 13-yer old girl, raped, sodomized and fellated her, pled guilty to all of these offenses and then cheated justice by fleeing the United States while awaiting his sentence.

Now other Hollywood geniuses are going public with their support of Polanski, like Woody Allen, who left a Polaroid of Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter, naked and spread-eagled for the camera, on the living room mantle for Mom to find. (It’s in the transcript of the ensuing custody trial, which Woody lost, if anyone cares to look it up.) Although Soon Yi was underage when she began having sex with Allen, he argued that her adoption records were inaccurate, and that she was really 19. He also famously said, “The heart wants what the heart wants,” an odd confusion of basic anatomy for a genius.

If Allen, Lynch and other Hollywood pedophilia apologists believe that genius is a defense for contriving to ravish children, maybe there is hope for Phillip Garrido, the pedophile who kidnapped 11-year old Jaycee Dugard and raped, impregnated and imprisoned her for 18 years. Plop a beret on his head, dress him in an Armani suit, teach him to play the saxophone, and presto… he’s a genius! Case dismissed!

How many geniuses does it take to realize that prepubescent and teenage girls are entitled to possess their own evolving sexuality, and that no matter how curious or malleable they may be, molestation by an adult during their young, formative years can cause irreparable damage? Apparently, more geniuses than the film industry has yet to produce.

An adolescent girl who experiments with peer sex is not damaged by it in the same manner as when molested by an adult. It’s her body and her sexuality, so she is entitled to express it. In fact, when her curiosity is satisfied by her own, natural impulses, within her peer group, she generally is empowered, in spite of how disapproving her parents may be. But when the same adolescent is drugged by an older man to whom she is not attracted, and forced into adult sexual activity she neither wants nor is ready to experience, she is not empowered, she is victimized.

It doesn’t matter to me that Samantha Geimer, Polanski’s victim, is now all grown up and wants to “put the incident behind her.” I know from personal experience that forgiveness can be a trick victims play on themselves to escape the trauma reverberating in their memories. All the more reason that society should champion the victim’s cause with at least as much fervor as those in the film industry (and elsewhere) dismiss it.

I can live without another Rosemary’s Baby. But I will not live with the notion that it’s OK for an adult to act out misdirected sexual impulses with children merely because he or she can make a movie.

Well said as always. I wonder what people supporting Polanski would say if they had been robbed 25 years ago and suddenly the perpetrator was caught. Most likely, "lock him up and throw away the key" would be the response. (I'm not equating robbery with rape, just saying that people are hypocritical in their reactions.)

I agree with everything except the part about forgiveness being a trick victims play on themselves, but I think I know where you are coming from. I just know that forgiveness has been the cornerstone of mental and spiritiual health for me. I'm not talking about shallow, denial-based forgiveness, but rather forgiveness as part of a process that allows the forgiver to be free. For me it has been the key to everything.

Alanis Morrissette has a lot of enlightened songs that deal with her experience on this topic-particularly on the "Under Rug Swept" CD.

Alice Miller has also written volumes on childhood trauma. Her website is Her writings clearly demonstrate that all societies must take very seriously to improve the well-being of each individual, and also to prevent the next Hitler from manifesting.

I did find a quote on forgiveness on Miller's site that you will appreicate: "Miller also discusses how institutionalized religion itself can contribute to the crushing guilt that prevents us from being healthy and conscious adults. She urges society to realize that the Fourth Commandment -"Honor thy father and thy mother"- offers immunity to abusive parents. Indeed, she argues, it is healthier not to extend forgiveness to parents whose tyrannical childrearing methods have resulted in unhappy, and often ruined, adult lives."

Pat I could not have said it better.. (not in a million years of trying)... and what you said about forgiveness being a trick victims play on themselves to escape the trauma in their memories.... really gave me something to think about.

John: I was speaking specifically in terms of forgiveness for the humiliation of molestation... but I see where you're coming from. I also have read Alice Miller and have grown from her psychological insights. Thanks for giving us another perspective for consideration!

I really don't understand this double standard bull. It really mitigates the sense of seriousness of such an offense. This woman who was a child was doubly victimized when she was raped by Polanski and then having the act condoned by her own mother. Sex with a minor is not only morally repugnant, it is a serious crime!!! This is really a class issue. Any poor fool who didn't have the means would not have escaped the punishment...our prisons containing a disproportionate number impoverished men of color is testament to that. Well, yes... 30 years has elapsed but the crime was still committed and a crime that has no doubt had a major impact on this woman's life. The message has to be clear in the sandstorm of popular support from Hollywood, CHILDREN ARE NOT TO BE EXPLOITED IN ANY WAY,SEXUALLY OR OTHERWISE BY ANY ADULT!!! Polanski needs to serve his time and if the girl's mother is still alive, she needs to be accountable for her crime as well. And, while we are at it...Woody Allen should go to jail as well! There are no grey areas here and to pretend so is just not okay. Thanks Pat, for once again bringing some sensibility to this crazy world we live in.

Yak, i'm so glad to be back in your world. I have missed a lot, but am catching up and you are as fabulous as ever.

Don't these people know that children are listening? I don't know what they are thinking, but I will not see Polanski's movies or Allen's. At least Allen did not get custody of his children.

StacyJ: I, too, REFUSE to watch any Woody Allen movie, even though Annie Hall used to be one of my top-five favorite films.

I will now add Polanski's films to my personal black list.

It's so nice to hear from you!

I agree with Anna, it's such a class issue. Polanski isn't just a genius, he's a rich genius with rich friends.

Anna: Thanks for your insight... It's true, this IS a class issue... especially for the perps.

However, when it comes to women and girls, society's cavalier disregard of the sexual abuse that we suffer at the ratio of one in every three erases class distinction. True, the children of the rich are safer from street violence than are ghetto kids. But the richest child is not safe in her own home from relatives, who perpetrate a majority of such crimes.
