As for me, I'm with Roy (if you can believe THAT!) with wanting Obama to go big and sweeping with helpful programs and radical change from business as usual for this country -- like Roosevelt and the WPA. I'm going to be really disappointed if he stays timid and close to the center like Pelosi is hinting and like his advisors appear to indicate.
If there is an Obama Claus, I want an end to the war for Christmas.

Journalists, like other vocations, have allowed cracks to weaken the walls of their ethics/morals, and thus their integrity & trust.
Is there such a word as, "Agendaists", as a new synonym for journalists.

I really don't care if that story was a fake or not...my source of discomfort and dislike is that statement she spouted off over and over and over (hey wait...maybe I saw the same clip 5,000 times!) "Palling (sp?) Around With Terrorist" in that strange accent she has....it was like nails on a chalkboard for me...however, I shouldn't talk, my southern slang does not sound much better...I'm sure! But you wouldn't hear me enciting a crowd into a frenzy about anything...well unless Victoria's Secret was having a Buy one Get three free Miracle Bra sale or something....:)

Hey folks, watch the journalist bashing, please. As a professional journalist, I have yet to meet any of these "agendaists" you refer to.
Everybody I knew in college who went into TV news were in sororities and fraternities - the "me-too'ers". So, when I see the TV news media rush from one sensationalist story to another, it strikes me as just a by-product of the kind of people who go into broadcast journalism - the popular kids who follow every trend. We love Bill Clinton! We hate Bill Clinton! We love Hillary! We hate Hillary! Love Palin! Hate Palin! They'll run in any direction so long as everybody's doing it, and if there's a shadow government or some other evil agenda at work, all it has to do is shift their direction like dogs herding sheep.
Print journalism is a different deal. IMHO, the problem there is that eggheads make lousy businessmen and women, and eggheads go into print journalism. Don't ever play Trivial Pursuit with a journalist, because we'll go through the entire board and finish without anyone else taking a turn. Being a journalist is like cranking out term papers all day long - research and write, research and write, research and write. Like academics, journalism doesn't mix well with business.
Publishers make incredibly boneheaded decisions every day, and I can't imagine newspapers will last more than a few more years as a result. My favorite move is when they fire local reporters and replace them with national AP copy, the stuff that anyone can get online, on demand, for free. Eliminate local news, the one thing that sets you apart. Well done, egghead.
Look, there's no profit margin in news. Just like every other struggling industry, there are fewer workers and an expectation of greater overall productivity. Double check facts? Puh-lease, do you have time to double check your work? If the handful of journalists and editors still left in newsrooms across the country took the time to double check anything, there wouldn't be a product. I'd imagine it's like this in many offices across the country. I know doctors who lose sleep because they can't do their jobs as well as they'd like, due to economics.
I think many countries have national news services because it's really, really tough to turn a profit in journalism. Freedom of speech doesn't happen in a money-free void. It's no wonder so many news sources have corporations behind them, influencing the direction of their coverage.
I'm not denying that's not happening at the top, I think the very existence of Faux News is proof of that. But the idea that all journalists are evil and scheming to mislead America is insulting to those of us who do it for a living.
It's not only economics, our freedom of speech has been seriously reduced since the first Bush administration. The first Gulf war was the very first time in our nation's history in which journalists weren't permitted on the battlefield. You're all aware that publications and TV news are banned from printing/broadcasting photos of flag-draped coffins, right? Part of what you're seeing is flat out censorship.
People who cover Washington beats have two choices: accept and print the government's official word, or lose your press pass. Journalists were jailed during the Republican National Convention for reporting on the riots. CNN gets around this with their iReporters, aspiring journalists who work for free, providing them with video and print reporting.

One more thing, regarding Nikki's comment on getting Bush out of office sooner rather than later ... had we IMPEACHED the muphuka and that vampire Cheney years ago, we wouldn't be in this mess! We act like we're stuck with Bush, when we're not. He's a friggin war criminal, impeach his ass already!
I just don't understand why people continue to support the Dems, who let Clinton get impeached for lying about a BJ, yet can't mount a sure-bet impeachment against a war criminal. Seriously, even now they're sitting in Congress, considering bailing out GM, a company that has pretty much destroyed Detroit in pursuit of greed, sending jobs overseas. Fuck GM, do any Americans even work for them anymore? What in the hell are the Dems doing? They aren't looking out for you and me, and Obama can't do this alone.

Okay, have to be annoyed somewhere so I thought I would do it here...
My collegue at work said today, "Nikole, (my psuedo work "friend" name)they did a study and the latest and greatest was that the people who voted for Obama, that is 80% of them, knew nothing about his view on ANY important issues, they only knew things like, McCain had 7 houses and the GOP spent a $150,000 on Palin's outfits..that is all they knew. So it is proven that most people who voted for him are un-educated." So I said, well then how do you explain the people like me that voted for him? And he said (very arrogantly I might add) that, "Well, you must be in that small 20%". Can you guys believe???!!!! So that is how they are justifying his election by the American people?????
I want to know of all those "educated" people who voted for Bush...what % of them were of the CHRISTIAN religion...and what % of them knew where Bush stood on ANYTHING but "the sanctity of life" and his "Born-Again Christian" status???????????? And of those people who voted for Bush how many of them gave a damn that he used FEAR to take us into a war and the media (of their NON-Report of Bin Laden) to take us into a war against the WRONG people...what % of them TOTALLY disregarded that and voted him in AGAIN?????? Huh??? Tell me that?????? Yes, I mad fun of Bush when he mis-spoke and said ridiculous things and just came off seeming sooooooooo NOT smart....and yes I decried many times over the last eight years WHY did all these people vote for them??? Why do they not agree with me??? I DONT UNDERSTAND...but never, never, never did I say that ALL THOSE people that voted for him...well, they just aren't smart!!!!!!!! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! AARRGGGHHHGHHH!

The UN is going to vote on wether to commit US troops in Iraq for another three years....the Iraqis have rioted against this even burning an effigy of GWB and throwing things at it??? Please tell me again??? Why are we there? Why haven't they paid us for our help? Why is NOBODY coming to RESCUE the US when we are in crisis...
Also, Im starting to agree with Pat Buchanan...maybe this FREE TRADE stuff is for the birds...cause Americans do all the consuming....the other countries aren't buying our stuff.....maybe imposing a few restrictions will help...maybe building a car that does not rely on GAS....is the WAVE OF THE FUTURE??!!! Give them a bailout and make them invest in developement....build the best DAMN car out there that does NOT need gas...Oil Companies be damned...

I don't agree that the answer to the big three American car companies is to kick out the Unions....maybe impose on the foreign companies that build cars here...have factories here...to ONLY HIRE UNION WORKERS....then they will have the same cost...competition will be more even???!! Just a thought. Also, enforce them to buy the materials they assemble in the U.S. FROM the U.S....

Nikki, the study your friend mentioned was recently done by Zogby, as commissioned by a RIght wing radio guy whose name escapes me. He's working on a documentary called How Obama Got Elected and has some pretty damning footage of really, really low information Obama voters outside the polls. Whatever, you could find the same thing for McCain voters so I ignored that guy.
What happened, however, was the Zogby -- who certainly knows how to do an actual poll -- found that a huge number of people who voted for Obama didn't know Obama's actual positions and only knew about Sarah Palin's wardrobe cost, etc. Zogby interviewed only Obama voters who at least had a high school diploma and most interviewees were college educated.
This ended up being an inditement of the media as much as of people's low information level because the mainstream media didn't report most of what Obama actually believes in -- and now they're acting surprised when he pads a center-right cabinet with the very hawks and freemarketers people like me were screaming about all along.
So, your friend wasn't exactly right -- because it's just one poll -- but there is some real validity to the claim that Obama has never really been reported for what he believes but more for a grand, vague idea of being a Democrat and many of his supporters can't answer basic questions about his positions. Also, it mostly says that the media chooses to focus on tabloid NOTHING "news" like Palin's wardrobe and NOT on things like the candidates' actual meat and potatoes policy positions.

Did I hear someone say they are starting to wonder about free trade? I feel like I'm in an echo chamber from what I was harping about last month. That's the main reason I've been worried about Obama -- because of his Chicago School Milton Friedman free trade devotion and all the advisors who believe the same. In addition, his economic team has over 50% of people directly tied to the biggest problem-companies responsible for this economic mess.
The far-left progressive blogs are seeing a big uptake in readership since the election, since a lot of people are so surprised by the people Obama is choosing for his cabinet and high level advisory positions. I just want to ask, were'nt you guys paying attention all along?

I think our downfall was when they stopped making investment firms back up their borrowings with at least a little capital! I think it was called the net capital rule or some such thing. I can't just blame Bush's Treasury dude...I think it was a unanimous vote...*sigh* I guess we were equally dumb, Repubs. and Dems.
