Hands Across the Political Divide

Response to my “Keys to the Universe” post was so passionate, and so diverse, that I am proposing we reach across the opinions that divide us in search of common ground.

I invite you, beloved members of this debate community, to accept this challenge:

With less than two weeks to go before we elect the next President of the United States, it seems clear that most of us have made up our minds about where we stand on the issues. So, instead of debating each other in hopes of changing minds, let’s get real about the hopes and fears that drive our opinions.

Please list in the comments you post your single greatest hope, and single greatest fear, about EACH of the two candidates. (It has to be just one hope and one fear… listing them all would defeat this purpose.)

I hereby restrain my Virgo impulse to search for the clever turn of phrase… I’m just going to share my honest hopes and fears to get things started, and hope this will encourage you to do the same…

Yak’s Greatest Hope for Obama: That he will help Americans call a truce on our culture war, so we can connect first on areas where we agree, and progress from there to a state of tolerance for areas in which we disagree.

Yak’s Greatest Fear about Obama: That he will fail to accomplish this, dimming the hopes of all who yearn for a spirit of cooperation and equality in America.

Yak’s Greatest Hope for McCain: That he will live up to his maverick claim and infuse his administration with transparency, ending his predecessor’s assumption that the President is entitled to make and execute his policies in secrecy.

Yak’s Greatest Fear about McCain: That he will set back women’s rights (and the entire progressive agenda) by packing the Supreme court with conservative judges.

OK… now it’s your turn.

Great post as always, Yak.

My greatest hope for Obama is that he can truly restore our country's reputation with the rest of the world, representing the beautiful racial diversity of our country and bringing back all the best liberal ideals that helped make our nation so great.

My biggest fear is that we've been fooled by a fairly corrupt Reagan in JFK's clothing -- that he is completely in over his head, all inexperienced, ineffectual slick talk, no real grasp of the complexity of our many crises and backed by the same-as-usual-free-market advisors and Zeb Brzinizki.

My biggest hope for McCain is that he is really the Maverick everyone was in love with 8 years ago -- a moderate who will work easily with a Democratic Congress, willing to compromise, and more of an Eisenhower than a Bush and that he and Palin will put a new, more reasonable face on the Republican party bringing it out of the dark ages -- including the great example of having a woman in the white house. (Our little girls don't see Palin's politics -- they just see that a woman is holding one of the highest offices, and they can see themselves there, too. I believe that is a victory. Same as Obama being a victory for our country's minorities.)

My biggest fear is that he's a crazy, Vietnam flash-backing warmonger who will keep us in Iraq for another term, and get us into another major war, and kill even more people all while driving our economy into the ground.

My greatest hope is that Barack Obama is able to lead this country with fortitude and diplomacy, leading us out of this economic abyss. My greatest fear is that he is not experienced enough to do so.

My greatest hope for John McCain is that he sees the error of the Republican's 8 year slaughter and rectifies the Presidency by not "being another George Bush." My greatest fear is that he would die and Sarah Palin would be our President.

Greatest Hope for BO:Infrastructure improvement via job creation ala WPA from the 1930's

Greatest fear for BO: That he smells. Yuk Yuk. Seriously, that he lest Pelosi and Reid hi-jack his agenda.

Greatest hope for McCain : That he lives through the first term so I never have to utter the phrase, President Palin.

Greatest Fear for McCain: He dies in office during his term.

Greatest hope for McCain: that he retires from politics Nov. 5 and takes over Bob Dole's old Viagara gig. Take some time to enjoy Cindy's campaign-funded suck & tuck.

Greatest fear for McCain: that he'll win, and like most men, he'll be busy screwing off with his buddies while the woman does all the actual work.

Greatest hope for Obama: That he's an honest and honorable man.

Greatest fear for Obama: That he's assasinated.
